Information is invaluable – and so is reaching out to offer a helping hand to someone in need.  These non-profit organizations inspire me to stay informed, involved and connected with humanitarian issues that are near and dear to my heart:

www.womenforwomen.org  The mission of Women for Women is to empower women survivors in conflicted and war-torn countries to become economically self-sufficient.  A one-year, $35 a month sponsorship partners you with a woman who receives the experience of attending educational classes which teaches her not only a vocational skill set, but also about running her business, her legal rights and about healthcare.  What she learns changes the trajectory of her life and immeasurably impacts those in her family and community.  The sponsorship is also designed to make it personal with the option of exchanging letters and building a friendship through the mail.

www.childrenincorporated.org  As a result of poverty, millions of children worldwide will not receive an education this year.  This non-profit provides resources for underprivileged children that are in need – in the United States and abroad.  A $30 monthly sponsorship partners you with a child to help provide the basic necessities such as food, clothing, healthcare and education – all of which positively impacts the life of a child and changes their life forever.

www.kiva.org  This non-profit organization works by allowing people like you and me to lend money, via the internet, to people who don’t have access to traditional banking systems.  One hundred percent of your loan (as small as $25) is sent to Field Partners who administers the loan into the recipient’s account.  Your (loaned) money is combined with that from other lenders to a borrower of your choice, and over time you receive updates as these dollars are repaid into your Kiva account.  The repayment can be used to empower another borrower, can be donated to Kiva, or withdrawn.  Kiva has 450 volunteers in over 80 countries around the world.

www.doctorswithoutborders.org  (Medecins Sans Frontieres)  Recipient of the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize, MSF is an international medical organization working in conflict zones, after natural disasters, during epidemics, with malnutrition and helping those who need health care.  This organization is a neutral and impartial non-profit that aims first and foremost to provide high-quality medical care to those that need it most.  On any given day, more than 30,000 doctors, nurses and many other experts can be found providing medical care around the world.  Their website and Facebook page is robust with information on their activity in some 70 countries around the world.
